Pirates and Lost Treasure of Maine Wednesday, July 17th at 7 pm.

Pirates and Lost Treasure of Coastal Maine, presented by author and pirate re-enactor Greg Latimer, will offer insightful and factual information about Maine-based pirates as well as pirates from “away,” who while not based in Maine, traveled to the area for a variety of purposes.

Many of these facts will be new to readers, as Maine is not often considered a pirate enclave. In fact, just like today’s seasonal tourists, pirates traveled to Maine during the summer months, when the Caribbean was hot and subject to hurricanes. Pirates also valued the uninhabited “smuggler’s coast” of Maine, complete with hidden coves and deserted islands.

Of course, pirates also brought treasure to Maine… Some for spending, and some for hiding away. We will investigate these reports to see if facts support the stories, de-bunk them if need be, or ascertain that in the end they remain a mystery, even after thorough examination.

Pirates also brought their weapons, vessels, tactics and unique culture to Maine; and these will be examined in a way that will demonstrate to readers that truth is often indeed stranger than fiction.
