A Fire Side Chat on Camp Benson – Saturday, October 26th at 1 p.m.

Did you know Camp Benson was more than just the name of a road in Newport?

Did you know a giant slide was in Newport during special events? Please join us on
Saturday, October 26th, at 1pm, at the Newport Cultural Center as we will share the
history about Camp Benson, a GAR Civil War Encampment.
The program will include a presentation from Dr. C. Ian Stevenson, phD from
Boston University.  He will present parts of his dissertation titled “‘This Summer-Home
of the
Survivors’: The Civil War Vacation in Architecture and Landscape, 1878-1918.”.  There
will be artifacts, documents, and photographs from the Newport historical collection
available to view.  We invite everyone to join us and share their stories, memories and
pictures about Camp Benson.
Come learn about the field events, the Newport Band performances, dances,
boat rides from town to “the landing” and more about this historic place in Newport.
There will be hosts dressed in Civil War clothing, Civil War swords and collectibles on
