Pirates and Lost Treasure of Coastal Maine with Maine Author Greg Latimer

Pirates and Lost Treasure of Coastal Maine, presented by author and pirate re-
enactor Greg Latimer will offer insightful and factual information about Maine-
based pirates as well as pirates from “away,” who while not based in Maine,
traveled to the area for a variety of purposes.
Many of these facts will be new to readers, as Maine is not often considered a
pirate enclave. In fact, just like today’s seasonal tourists, pirates traveled to Maine
during the summer months, when the Caribbean was hot and subject to
hurricanes. Pirates also valued the uninhabited “smuggler’s coast” of Maine,
complete with hidden coves and deserted islands.
Of course, pirates also brought the treasure to Maine… Some for spending, and some
for hiding away. We will investigate these reports to see if facts support the
stories, de-bunk them if need be, or ascertain that in the end, they remain a
mystery, even after a thorough examination.
Pirates also brought their weapons, vessels, tactics and unique culture to Maine;
and these will be examined in a way that will demonstrate to readers that truth is
often indeed stranger than fiction.

Call Me American: A Memoir with Abdi Nor Iftin

Description

Abdi Nor Iftin first fell in love with America from afar. As a child, he learned English by listening to American pop and watching action films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. When U.S. Marines landed in Mogadishu to take on the warlords, Abdi cheered the arrival of these Americans, who seemed as heroic as those of the movies.

Sporting American clothes and dance moves, he became known around Mogadishu as Abdi American, but when the radical Islamist group al-Shabaab rose to power in 2006, it became dangerous to celebrate Western culture. Desperate to make a living, Abdi used his language skills to post secret dispatches, which found an audience of worldwide listeners. Eventually, though, Abdi was forced to flee to Kenya.

In an amazing stroke of luck, Abdi won entrance to the U.S. in the annual visa lottery, though his route to America did not come easily. Parts of his story were first heard on the BBC World Service and This American Life. Now a proud resident of Maine, on the path to citizenship, Abdi Nor Iftin’s dramatic, deeply stirring memoir is truly a story for our time: a vivid reminder of why America still beckons to those looking to make a better life.

About the Author

Abdi Nor Iftin currently lives in Maine. He is studying political science at the University of Southern Maine, and he plays soccer every Saturday in a melting-pot league of Americans and immigrants from around the world.

Nothing’s Ever Lost

Jack and Anna are dead. Not romantic vampire dead. Not even night-of-the-living dead, but really dead.

At least Jack is. Anna might just be having a near-death experience. It’s surprisingly hard to tell. Either way, they’re on a path through the afterlife; where Death wears a polo shirt, factories manufacture broken things, and forests try to trap you. To make it through, they have to stick together.

But sticking together would be a lot easier if they weren’t both keeping secrets. Anna is awesome at pretending everything is fine…until she isn’t. Meanwhile, Jack is afraid he’s gone crazy and this whole adventure is part of his delusion.

Somehow, they’re going to have to trust each other if they want to make it through to the other side — wherever that is.

Sarah Perry Author Talk Via Skype

“On the night her mother was murdered, twelve-year-old Sarah Perry was asleep in the same house. Haunted by fractured memories of that night, and by the turbulent years that follow the murder, she tracks down the truth of what really happened. Ms. Perry’s memoir of her Maine childhood, After the Eclipse: A Mother’s Murder, a Daughter’s Search, is both a gripping mystery and a heart-breaking love letter to the fiercely devoted mother she lost.”
